Prez Says, August 2023

Mike Nelson

Hello everyone. I hope you’ve been having a fantastic summer! Alas, September is just around the corner. But whenever pumpkin coffee and Oktoberfest beer are brewing, you can count on your New England chapter to kick off another administrative year! I’m pleased to report that, with the generous participation of new and returning volunteers, and with the unanimous results of our recent election, our chapter is well positioned to offer you even more opportunities to learn from and connect with your local Tech Comm community in 2023-2024.

Election Results

We held a chapter-wide election during a two-week period starting on July 20. Ballots were emailed to all currently active members. Upon tallying all votes received, the following candidates have been elected to a one-year term on the chapter council:

  • President: Carolyn Palo
  • Secretary: Destiny Dudley
  • Treasurer: Mike Nelson (yep, you’re not rid of me just yet!)

Thank you to everyone who voted. And on behalf of the entire chapter membership, thank you Carolyn and Destiny for volunteering to serve in these essential officer positions! The chapter literally could not continue to exist without you stepping up to the plate. I look forward to working with both of you going forward.

Signing Off, With Gratitude

Although I’ll continue to serve on the council, this is my final Prez Says installment. (Carolyn will likely pick it up in the fall.) Therefore, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the following key people I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with these past 2½ years. Sharon Metzger, thank you for your long-standing commitment, positivity, and cool professionalism as the chapter’s website manager and outgoing Secretary. Destiny Dudley, thank you for taking over as interim Secretary until your new role became official today – your boundless energy seeking out program speakers will certainly pay dividends this year! Charlie Nickell, thank you for carving out time in your crazy schedule to serve as our Social Media Manager during 2022-2023. Kim Morris, thank you for your brief but fully engaged time on the council serving as Treasurer in 2022. Steve Jong, I can’t thank you enough for all your guidance while serving as Immediate Past President, as well as your dedicated work chairing the InterChange Conference Committee and Bylaws Committee. You even found time to present a couple of top-notch educational programs along the way! Finally, I’d like to thank all of you, the members of the New England Chapter, for sticking with us through challenging times and placing your trust in me as your chapter President.

Fall Gathering

Before I close, you might recall that we had been looking to schedule an informal get-together somewhere where we can enjoy some refreshments, network face-to-face with our colleagues, and have a little fun. The council hasn’t forgotten this idea. In fact, we’re planning to hold our first in-person social event since the pandemic at Kimball Farm in Westford, MA. Details will be announced soon – stay tuned!
