Chapter members in good standing are eligible to vote in the election and will receive ballot instruction in email. Ballots are due by midnight Eastern time on Monday, 2 November 2020. We urge all members to vote in this important election.
Immediate Past President: Steven Jong
After his terms as President, Steve automatically assumes the role of Immediate Past President.
For President: Mike Nelson
Mike Nelson is Product Documentation and Training Manager for KVH Industries, Inc., a global leader in mobile connectivity and inertial navigation systems (www.kvh.com). Since joining the company in 2000, Mike has developed numerous user and technical manuals, help systems, video tutorials, eLearning courses, and configuration wizards. He also launched and administers the company’s learning management system. He holds a bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) in English Writing and Communication from UMass Dartmouth and is a veteran of the U.S. Navy submarine service.
A senior member of the STC’s New England chapter, Mike has participated in the publications competition every year since 2002, often serving as a judge and committee member. From 2007-2009, he chaired the Boston chapter’s Tech Pubs competition. And in 2018, he brought the regional competition back to New England after a four-year hiatus by partnering with the STC Alliance and serving on its council. As a competition entrant over the years, he has earned over 30 regional and international awards, including three regional Best in Shows.
Outside the competition, Mike led a Progression topic at the 2011 STC Summit. More recently, he presented training projects at the Lectora User Conference, the Trivantis Creativity in ELearning webinar series, and the DevLearn DemoFest.
For Treasurer: Nathan Richardson
Nathan Richardson is a writer and technical communicator currently living in Maine. He is interested in improving user experiences and expanding access and accessibility through thoughtful writing and information design. Nathan’s career as a guitar maker (luthier) led to the 2019 release of his self-published book: Learning to Speak Guitar: A Luthier’s Thesaurus. Nathan holds certifications in Lean Foundations and Lean Six-Sigma (White Belt). He is also the facilitator for the STC Accessibility community of interest (COI).
For Secretary: Sharon Metzger (candidate for re-election)
Sharon Metzger has recently been a member of STC and the New England chapter for 6 years and was a member of the STC Boston chapter in the 1990s. She has been a volunteer with STC competitions and with the InterChange regional conference and has served on the administrative council as secretary for the past year and web site manager for two years. She has 30 years of experience as a technical writer, with a bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication and Mathematics (MIT) and a Master of Technical and Professional Writing (Northeastern). Sharon currently leads Product Documentation at Blue Cedar in Marlborough, MA.
