The Search for Simplicity

with John Smart of Smart Communications, Inc.

Eventbrite - The Search for Simplicity

To quote engineer Leonardo De Vinci, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” This statement can apply to the clarity of technical documentation. The advances in electronic publishing, global internet, social media, and Artificial Intelligence now offer companies an easy method to simplify and distribute complex technical information to global readers.

John Smart, President of Smart Communications, Inc., New York, offers to share his global vision for the use of Controlled English (CE) and Simplified Technical English (STE) as a worldwide language. This is a great opportunity to hear from an expert who can explain Simplified Technical English and debunk the myths.

During the presentation, John will show a simplification tool on FrameMaker15. Join us for peek into the future language coming to the cloud and tablets, and be on hand to win door prizes from Adobe!

John will provide a PDF copy of the difficult-to-obtain European ASD-STE100 Specification that is the global standard for Airlines, aerospace and military manuals. He will also answer questions from chapter members about STE.

About the speaker

John has 25 years of experience in technical writing, printing and publishing at companies in many industries. He is a member of PLAIN, an advocate group that “helps” government agencies to comply with the Plain Language Act of 2011 and Plain English mandates.

John is a pioneer in the field of Artificial Intelligence, which his firm has applied to the simplification of Airbus A380 technical manuals. His company teaches technical writers how to write in a controlled language called ASD-STE100 Simplified Technical English. The use of STE is mandated by 845 airlines, FAA, DOD, NATO, US Military, Global Maritime, Rail and Space. A derivative language called Controlled English is now used for medical devices, law enforcement and customer support.

John has worked and lived in many countries and understands their cultures. He hails from down under, graduated from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, and won a scholarship to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

His presentation style is entertaining and engaging with some dinkum Aussie humor.
